How to Search the “Tihen Notes” for Annotated Newspaper Articles

Use Back Button to return to previous page.

Practice by looking for other articles about Carleton School (teacher demonstration or individual project).

1.  You will use two browsers to access two websites at the same time. Access Wichita Photo Archives.  Open another browser and access the Tihen Notes. This will enable you to leave both Web sites active and refer back and forth between them if necessary.

2.  Select a newspaper to search in the Tihen Notes.

You have read notes for an article about Carleton School that was published in the Wichita Eagle. Now you will search the Wichita Beacon for more articles about the school.

3.  Select a date to search in the Tihen Notes.
You learned from the metadata that the building in the photos was built in 1879.
Open the drop-down menu of the Wichita Beacon, scroll to 1879, and click “Go.”

4.  Search the Wichita Beacon by keyword.
You learned from the metadata that Carleton School was originally named First Ward School. Use Ward as your keyword. It is not necessary to capitalize.

Be aware that the program will also search words within words, so you will see it select words such as Edward and awardCheck each selection to see if it relates to your topic and continue searching.

Use the “Binoculars” icon to make a keyword search.  After it finds the first selection, use the “Binocular-with-Back-Arrow” icon to continue searching the same word.
Several short articles will appear.

5.  Copy relevant articles if necessary:

Click on the “Text Selection Tool” button at top left (Capital T).
Drag the cursor over article to highlight it.
Select “copy” in Edit menu or use keys Ctrl + c.
Open a Word document and select “paste” in Edit menu or use keys Ctrl + v.
Save document; print if appropriate.

6.  If time allows, follow the same procedures to locate articles about the school in later years after it was renamed Carleton School.
