Description: Prototype car, acronym name stands for "The American Sportscar Company." Based on a design by Gordon Buehrig, built of post-World War II aluminum. It was shown in Wichita in 1948 in the hope of contracting with Beech Aircraft Company for production of the aviation-inspired automobile. This model is the only one ever built, it is now owned by the Cord Auburn Dusenberg Museum in Auburn, Indiana. Shown here at the Cardwell Manufacturing Company in Wichita; owner H. W. Cardwell and employees are identified (on file).

Description: Planeview community (lower right) was built under federal guidelines in 1943 to provide housing for defense workers arriving to find employment in the aircraft companies. Hilltop Manor and Beechwood were similar developments. In 1951, adjacent land belonging to the Municipal Airport was converted into an Air Force Base. The "tent city" (above left) provided early, temporary housing for Air Force personnel.

Description: View of housing units in either Planeview or Beechwood, two of three developments built by the Federal Public Housing Authority during World War II. The first, Hilltop Manor, was constructed in 1941. Planeview and Beechwood, plus a Trailer Park, were built by 1943 as Wichita struggled to provide adequate and wholesome homes for the thousands of workers arriving in the city to work in the aircraft industry. The government designed these ‘minimal houses’ as four-rooms-with-bath units in structures for single- or multiple-families.
