Businesses in foreshortened view to left are Watson Brothers Food Store (1401 North Waco) and Funk appliances (1406 North Waco). The neon sign advertising the drugstore and Steffen’s Ice Cream was manufactured by the Claude Neon Company. A 1941 Nash automobile is parked at the curb.

Description: Identified as the West-Urn Café, 839 Parker. Operated by the owner of the West-Urn Grill, from 1946-1948. Parker Street is now incorporated into part of 13th Street. It originally extended west from the Little Arkansas River bridge to the city limits at the Arkansas River bridge. A 1937 Ford automobile is parked in front of the restaurant.

Description: The 81 Drive In Theatre was Wichita’s first drive-in theater. It opened in August, 1946. The theater was located north of the city limits at 6250 North Broadway. It took its name from US Highway 81, which coincided with Broadway as it crossed Wichita north to south. The motion picture “The Hurricane” was first released in 1937.

Description: Looking northeast at Butts Motor Company, 1520-24 and 1600 East Douglas. The photograph may have been staged to advertise the sale of cars with special controls to disabled people such as the men with the crutches. During the 1940s the Oldsmobile Company developed the first fully automatic transmission and promoted the “Hydra-Matic” to injured veterans returning from World War II. Each vehicle was equipped with controls determined by an individual’s specific needs. Other businesses in view include The Ferndale Café, Kansas Press, and Orpheum Cleaners.

Description: Prototype car, acronym name stands for "The American Sportscar Company." Based on a design by Gordon Buehrig, built of post-World War II aluminum. It was shown in Wichita in 1948 in the hope of contracting with Beech Aircraft Company for production of the aviation-inspired automobile. This model is the only one ever built, it is now owned by the Cord Auburn Dusenberg Museum in Auburn, Indiana. Shown here at the Cardwell Manufacturing Company in Wichita; owner H. W. Cardwell and employees are identified (on file).

Description: Exterior, front view of “Wichita House,” constructed near Wichita in Rose Hill, Kansas, in 1948. A 1948 Packard automobile is parked at right. The visionary design by R. Buckminster Fuller was based on his 1927 plan for a mass-produced house called the Dymaxion Dwelling Machine. Beech Aircraft Company constructed the house to demonstrate affordable, prefabricated housing that would take advantage of World War II surplus materials. The structure was made of aluminum and designed to withstand the elements, including a Kansas tornado. This model was one of only two prototypes ever produced. In 1991 the William Graham family donated it to the Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan.
